Oscar Fashions: Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten

This morning I was going through a slideshow of some of the Oscar looks - there weren't that many yet as it was still night in the US - and immediately I fell in love with one unexpected colourful look. Mad props to Maggie Gyllenhaal to go for a good splash of colour amongst the blush, beige and gold which dominated the red carpet. Immediately I had to look up the designer of her dress and none other than my personal chou-chou Dries Van Noten turned out to be the creater of this delicious gown.

It is however not so surprising that Gyllenhaal would show up on the red carpet wearing a Dries piece. Not only is he her favourite designer - as her speech at the 2009 FIT Artistry of Fashion Luncheon attests -, Dries also designed the actress' wedding gown.

Do you like the unusually draped silhouette and eye-catching print of Maggie's dress? Or would you prefer to see her in a more traditional gown?

I loved this dress too! It's one of my favorites of the night. Actresses tend to shy away from prints on the red carpet, so I loved that Maggie chose to embrace it. I also loved the colors that were chosen. That's a gorgeous blue, and I love the hint of orange that peeps through. The design itself was pretty simplistic, but anything more complicated would have been too much with that bold print.

I agree that the silhouette is pretty simple - thank god with that print - but I love all the detailed pleating and tucking around the top of the bodice and the waist which makes it different.

Not one of my favorites of the night, but it certainly does suit her. I don't think many other actresses could've pulled this dress off. Beautiful colors!

I'm always so excited to see what Maggie will do on the red carpet. She has such a fun and interesting style! I think my initial reaction to the color was surprise because, as you said, everyone else was in such muted beige tones. The print first struck me as somewhat unconventional for the Oscars, but the more I look at it I find that I really love it. Such a daring, fun and spirited choice!
