Beauty Review: Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara

Recently I bought my first prestige mascara, specifically Big Fatty Mascara by Urban Decay. Typically mascara is one of the things I never bother buying by prestige make-up brands because I find there are plenty of drugstore products that work perfectly well (such as Maybelline's The Falsies), but Hautelook was having an Urban Decay sample sale and I thought that would be the perfect time to give Big Fatty a try since it was only a few dollars. Here's what the fab folks at Urban Decay have to say about the mascara:

Infused with hemp oil to moisturize & keep lashes soft, this thickening mascara takes lashes to a new realm where fantasy & reality collide. The creamy formula thickens, lengthens & glosses lashes. Simply apply one coat of Big Fatty & let dry completely for doe-eyed, look-at-me lashes. For added oomph, apply a second coat. The result? Lashes so luscious, they'll look like falsies. Packaged in a funky Pucci-inspired component, Big Fatty features a giant, fuzzy brush that separates & coats lashes without clumping.

- Urban Decay

I bought the waterproof version in black (I haven't mastered colored mascaras yet - they just look too busy on me). The consensus is that I really love Big Fatty, but it's not super-special enough to make me spend the retail $20 on it every time I run out. The big brush is big. Huge, in fact. I wasn't sure it would be for me when I first saw the wand; I typically have a hard time maneuvering such thick bristles to get the best application. But this one was a magic wand because while it's overtly thick and fluffy it somehow handles like a skinny brush. The application was easy and it didn't clump a bit. It also doesn't dry out my lashes like some waterproof mascaras I've used in the past. On the contrary, my lashes actually felt rather natural and soft after it dried. Washing it off at the end of the day took a while, but some proper make-up remover will take it off in - pardon the pun - the blink of an eye.

If you're interested in trying out Big Fatty I recommend checking out their current deal on UrbanDecay.com where you can get it for half-price at $10. Are you a prestige-brand mascara girl or do you have a favorite from the drugstore that you swear by?

I agree, I find more expensive brands don't cut it for me with mascara or even liner. I am such a huge M.A.C and Urban Decay fan but would never waste a huge amount on mascara. I'm jealous of your sample sale!

I'm glad that you reviewed this mascara Casee because I've wondered if it was a good mascara since I was drawn to the design! It's kind of tempting isn't it? Your lashes look really lovely but it seems that you like the Falsies better, am I right? The Falsies are currently my favorite. I used to wear Max Factor mascara a lot but after they stopped selling the brand at Wal-Mart I had to switch to something else. I always mean to check and see if Ulta has that brand. Have you seen it there before?

MAC is my mascara of choice usually. This looks like it might be good but $20 is a bit steep. The MAC Plushblack is $13 at Nordstrom which I think is pretty middle of the road: more $$ than drugstore brands but -$ than the "prestige" brands. Yet I think of it as a high-end product. I do want to try MAC Falsies next. It has an $18 price point. Love this review though.

Love it! I now want to go out and get some! I'm using Maybelline right now, so I have a while before I try Urban Decay.
